Waking Up with a Workout at Phoebe Berks

Like all Phoebe campuses, Phoebe Berks offers a variety of exercise classes with varying levels of intensity to help keep residents active, strong, and healthy.

Joel Moceri, Fitness Coordinator at Phoebe Berks, directs the large majority of exercise classes at our Wernersville-based location. He works to keep classes fresh, engaging, and specific to the needs of the community.

One such class, focusing on abs, arms, and legs, has residents flocking to the aerobics room at 9:00 a.m. for what is one of the more intense classes offered on campus.

Moceri energetically guides residents through a fast-paced routine of seated and non-seated stretches, squats, dumbbell movements, lunges, crunches, and more. It’s enough to make anyone sweat just watching.

Residents follow along with Moceri’s movements, mirroring his body and using the aerobic room’s surrounding mirrors to check their form.

“It’s all about breaking down technique to focus on safety while moving,” says Moceri. Many of the exercises that Moceri leads residents through mimic common motions that older adults may encounter in their everyday lives. This level of functionality helps promote increased quality of life for our residents.

“Knowing that the concerns of getting older are being met is vital,” says Moceri. He aims to create inviting spaces where frailty can be replaced with strength and mobility. The end goal is to allow residents to get the most out of their lives.

Carol Orts, who has been attending exercise programs at Phoebe Berks for 10 years, says the workouts are “wonderful.”

“We work almost every muscle without overdoing it,” says Orts. “It has made all the difference in my ability to move without pain. The socialization is a nice bonus.”

Phoebe Berks also offers scheduled, at-home workouts through the televisions provided in each resident’s room. It’s just another way we’re helping residents live vibrant, fulfilling lives.
