Phoebe Berks Honors Pennsylvania Dutch Heritage Day

In the final of three Century Circle Socials this summer, Phoebe Berks celebrated Pennsylvania’s rich German heritage through an educational musical experience led by Keith Brintzenhoff.

Century Circle Socials are our way of saying “thank you” to our most generous donors. They offer an excellent opportunity for Phoebe supporters to meet our residents in a fun environment while experiencing the programs they help provide for our community.

As residents and guests filtered in, they were met with intricate and colorful Hex Signs, a product of Pennsylvania Dutch folk art. These creations provided the perfect backdrop for Brintzenhoff’s program about Dutch history.

An expert on Pennsylvania German folklore, Brintzenhoff shared a detailed history of the Pennsylvania Dutch, answering resident questions along the way and fostering audience participation.

Those in attendance were also treated to birch beer, shoofly pie, red beet eggs, and other traditional Dutch food.

At the end of his program, Brintzenhoff played several songs with some connection to Dutch heritage, the first two on a dulcimer and the final two on an autoharp. He explained how each instrument worked before he began playing and singing.

The event was enriching and interesting, celebrating Pennsylvania’s past. Residents left with a greater understanding of Dutch history.

Century Circle donors give gifts of over $1,000 a year. They are invited to exclusive events like these every year to celebrate all they do for our residents. We thank those in our Century Circle Society, as well as anyone who has donated to Phoebe Ministries.

We can’t wait for more Century Circle Socials next year! See you soon!
