Phoebe Richland Residents Get Their Rhythm On

Once a week, residents of Phoebe Richland gather for a drumming fitness session to channel their inner rhythm.

Led with the help of Community Life Assistant Nicholas Unger, the activity involves residents hitting exercise balls with cut-up pool noodles in lieu of drums and drumsticks. The group follows along to YouTube videos of people performing with similar equipment. Residents mirror what’s happening on screen as Unger encourages them to sing along to the popular songs backing each performance.

This low-impact form of musical participation allows residents of various skillsets to work on their sense of rhythm and make music with others. The activity also provides valuable arm and hand-eye coordination exercises.

Unger is sure to include time for stretching to help residents with the healing process following this complex activity.

Residents’ faces light up when they hear a song they recognize come on. As staff walk by, they smile at the sense of joy shared by the group.

Activities like these help our residents stay engaged and get more out of everyday life. To learn more about Phoebe Richland and Meadow Glen Personal Care, please visit phoebe.org/richland.
