The Phoebe Institute on Aging offers Free Conference on Dementia and Dementia Friendly Communities

Registration is now open for The Phoebe Institute on Aging Fall Conference, Building Friendly Communities: Addressing Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders. The conference will take place on October 16, 2014 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at DeSales University, University Center, 2755 Station Ave, Center Valley, PA 18034.

This is a timely event considering over five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, including an estimated 200,000 under the age of 65, according to the Alzheimer’s Association of America. As the baby boomers age the numbers are expected to increase dramatically in what is being called a “silver tsunami.”

The first of two keynote addresses at the conference will be delivered by Lori La Bey, creator of the first dementia friendly community and memory café in the country. Academic and Grassroots Efforts of Dementia Friendly Models will define what “dementia friendly” means and the effect it has on businesses, communities and families. Discussion will conclude with how the two models can work together to improve our dementia care culture and how attendees can begin their own dementia friendly effort.

The second keynote will be given by Brian Duke, Pennsylvania Secretary of Aging. The Pennsylvania State Plan for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders was recently approved by Governor Tom Corbett and proposes recommendations and a strategic approach to addressing the growth of the disease in Pennsylvania. Secretary Duke will discuss the process the committee took in developing the plan and the potential it has to help older Pennsylvanians and their families.

A panel discussion featuring dementia-related experts will offer ideas of how the local community can support their residents who have a dementia-related disorder and become involved in dementia-friendly efforts. The afternoon will feature three segments of break-out sessions offered by local and national speakers.

This is a free conference but registration is required by October 6. Attendance will be capped at 400 so be sure to register early in order to reserve your seat. Visit phoebe.org/piaconference to register, for more information or to download the registration brochure. Call 610-794-5150 with any questions.

This conference has been approved for six RN CE contact hours, six Social Work CE hours, including one ethics hour, and six pastoral care hours for the full day.
