Phoebe Richland Offers Organic and Sustainability Fair for Local Community

Richlandtown, PA- There is a growing trend in the United States to eat organic, sustainable food and Phoebe Richland is no exception. Over the past few months, Eileen Goos, Cura Hospitality Dining Services Manager, has taken the initiative to educate residents and staff about organic produce and provide locally sourced food options on the menu.

These new programs inspired the recent Organic and Local Farmer’s Market and Sustainability Fair in Phoebe Richland’s Springhouse Garden Park. The event was open to friends and neighbors of the Richlandtown community and included produce and products from local farms and businesses.

“Family members and vendors were happy to enjoy an opportunity that featured healthy living ideas and resources,” commented Kristin Kiehstaller, Director of Community Life for Phoebe Richland. “The event supported our initiative to provide better quality nutrition for residents.”

The coverage brought many local children to the event, quickly filling up the craft tables on the sunny autumn morning. Families could purchase organic produce provided by Ladybug Gardens Organic Farm in Coopersburg, enjoy live music and watch food demonstrations.

"Not only are we thankful to have participated in Phoebe’s event but we are even more thankful that we now have a connection with your facility,” said Chris Lurch, owner of Spice Up Your Life, a fair vendor who was featured on WFMZ Channel 69’s promotion of the event." We were so impressed with your organization that we will be volunteering our time to help in whatever way we are needed.”

Phoebe Richland Volunteer Honored with Presidential Service Award

Bill Harner, 91, of Quakertown began volunteering at Phoebe Richland after his wife, Flossie, was a resident. Prior to her death he spent every day with her and the staff and volunteers became like family. His desire to give back to the community that cared for his wife led him to volunteer as a transporter for the therapy department and a trip assistant during resident outings.

“Bill is a great volunteer because he is caring and respectful of the residents,” says Connie Quier, Community Life Coordinator. Harner learned how to use a computer for the first time at age 89 because he wanted to use the online system to track his volunteering hours. Quier reflects on Harner’s new computer skills: “Volunteering helps you stay young because it gives you a new purpose.”
